After Effects CS6 Production Premium

I have 2 Windows 7 boxes running AE CS6. Both were working fine but suddenly we cannot bring in any image sequences (.iff files) as a clip.
When you select the first image in the sequence the footage button stays greyed out. Individual images can be imported fine.
It works fine on the Macs we have and used to work on the PCs.
Images are named correctly.
Maybe a filename length (or path length limitation)?
Anyone else struck this?
The machines are running AVL licenses.
