Using after effects, I load video and it takes forever for it to load even before adding effects??

I have a Mac.  It is 2.7 GHz intel Core i5 with 8GB 1600 MHZ DDR3.  What am I doing wrong.  Even when it loads, everytime I make a small change, the green disappears and has to load again.  Is it my computer??
