Why does AE sometimes create bezier position keyframes and sometimes linear on the same path?

Hi people,

This is bugging me greatly.
I'm making my animation path and I'll happily be creating smooth curves and then the next position keyframe will suddenly be linear for no good reason I can see.

Any ideas?
