At the bottom of the comp window, I can't seem to set a transparency in the 'toggle alpha overlay' by changing the percentage number. No matter what I change it to, the mask color is solid. I would like to make it transparent to see parts of the background that the alpha will block. Is there another setting besides changing the percentage number to make a transparency Alpha Overlay?

Is there a way to uninstall Adobe Character Animator?

Illustrator layers not showing up in AE... not normal.
I have about 20 separate layers in Illustrator, organized properly for animating in After Effects.
When I bring it into after effects, nothing shows up. The layers appear to be invisible. Oh, and all the anchor points for each layer appear to be in the bottom left corner:
If I bring all the layers in as "footage" so it's just one layer in AE, it gives me this:
Seems like a glitch! That is not my drawing. I drew a person on a bike.

missing buttons in motion tracker
In my Tracker Panel, everything below the "Current Track" is gone. They aren't greyed out or anything, they just aren't there.
I can't select a track type, target for the motion, analyze, or apply.
Is this a problem with the download or is there a specific kind of shenanigan I have to select for those options to appear?

Can AE import .CR2 or .NEF files?
I'm sure I remember AE being able to import raw still files in years past (AE 7/8 era) but lately I get an error when I try to import files from a Nikon or Canon:
After Effects error: File couldn't be opened for writing: .. (3::0)
I've run the sequences through Lightroom to create sidecar XML files to see if that would help the process but no luck. At the moment I have to convert to PSD or TIFF and go from there, but that's not an ideal workflow.
Is there any trick to importing raw files into AE, or can it not be done? I'm running the latest CC version. Cheers

Why no support for GeForce GFX 750 Ti specifically?
Today I received and installed my brand new GeForce GFX 750 Ti, specifically bought for being able to use After Effects properly. My last card was an ATI/AMD FirePro which has no CUDA and thus couldn't use Ae. So I was using it CPU only! Which is total madness.
I was extremely disappointed to realize that my new GPU also isn't used almost at all, and that it's just as slow as my CPU-only! There is... no difference. I expected the difference to be like night and day.
Yes, I have the latest correct driver.
Yes, I have verified that other things using the GPU indeed are much faster.
I have looked through all the settings in After Effects and tried to make it use the GPU, but it just won't. I then saw on some page of compatible cards that Adobe lists all of them except for my card (basically). I didn't believe my eyes. I had no idea such a list even existed, and I especially didn't think that "certain models" of the same brand and model series of graphics cards would not be supported. It makes no sense. Both weaker and more powerful cards in the same damn series are supported, but not my card specifically? That's... unbelievable.
This has got to be a case of them simply having not yet tested my card well enough to call it "support", but it still sounds fishy to me as my card definitely has CUDA and is rather powerful. Much more powerful than other cards supported. It doesn't make sense to me.
Of course, I have it set to "use GPU anyway", but again... it doesn't seem to be used. This kills me. What is preventing Ae from using my card?

Buggy software, Impossible to preview, should I upgrade my 8 GB RAM to 16 GB?
Hello everyone,
I have a SSD disk with 200 GB left for my AE compositions, and a 8 GB RAM. I'm working on a huge project for months, a documentary with a lot of FX. I made a lot of 3D with Cinema 4D and Element 3D, the project contains thousands of layers, the duration is about 40 minutes. There was no problem until last week, the renders and previews used to be quite quick, working on AE was easy and smooth, but since last week, it suddenly became impossible to work on the project (when I reached 30 mn and add a lot of compositions with FX such as Holomatrix, I have dozens of compositions with Holomatrix applied on them), the render is way too short, I can only render 5 seconds, and when I'm working on AE, for example when I want to drag a new file into the comp it's extremely slow, it takes 5 minutes to import a small folder inside the project and so on.
Anyway, it turns difficult to work with AE and yet it was easy a few days ago. I tried everything I could on the internet, all the settings with the cache, the memory and so on. I work with my 8GB RAM and when I'm working on AE, my windows task manager tells me that 96% of the capacity of my RAM are being used. Does that mean that I don't have enough RAM to work on such big projects?
Do you think that if I upgrade it to 16 GB I will be able to use After Effects easily again so I can finish my project?

After effects and MAC. Making sense of the hundreds and hundreds of pages. Where are we now? (May 2016)
I've read over 200 pages of posts on the topic of AE and MAC. My head is spinning. Most of the critical information seems to be buried in technical information that's over my head.
I'm an artist and use after effects -- I guess in a way that would be the equivalent to using duct tape to fix a leak, but the results have been amazing. So I keep using the duct tape.
I'm at the point where I feel an updated computer (using a 2013 13" macbook with minimal ram) might help speed things up. I'm not doing anything crazy, I'm not in Hollywood, nor am I editing 4k. Just simple 1080 stuff that's pretty basic by benchmark standards and the stuff I've seen.
Can someone please dumb down all this technical infoand help me choose an adequate MAC workstation for AE?. I'd love to go PC, but just don't want to deal with relearning an OS - unfortunately I have over 20 years on the MAC and don't think I could keep my sanity if I move to a PC.
Much appreciated for any help and guidance.

AE cc hangs on initialize media core?
Tried all recomended; Firewall permissions; update quicktime; remove 32 folder from AE; delete all adobe products; use adobe cleaner; re-install. Everything, and still hangs on launch on Initialize Media Core.
system specs are: hp z400, intel xeon w3540 @2.93ghz, ram 8gb; windows 10.
any suggestions?

After Effects Blows Out Highlights
I am having a serious issue with After Effects while working with YUV 10 Bit files. Specifically Prores 422.
The problem occurs not when the footage is brought into AE, but rather when it is exported after an effect has been applied. I am specifically trying to work with the Timewarp plugin. When the clip is brought in, and the effect is applied and then exported, it becomes quite obvious that the highlights in the clip have peaked, creating an clip with light gray, washed out highlights.
As a test I brought the footage into AE, applied no effect, and then exposed it. The highlights were fine. This problem is occurring from the Timewarp plugin.

Recreate this effect
I was watching the anime Psycho-Pass and saw this effect in its ending. I really like the way it looks and is animated, so I want to recreate it. So far the things I know is that the particles are connected by lines and these lines build up triangular surfaces, and the hole thing is being looks like it is been rolled out from the center.
Thank you for every suggestion and idea of how to build this.

After Effects 13.5 is crappy
I have just started using 13.5 and immediately cannot play a single thing in realtime playback. And a knock on effect from that is i can't hear audio files either. I'm using a brand new mac pro!

Windows 10 and After Effects CS6 Revisited
Hello There,
I've seen a number of older threads about Windows 10 and After Effects CS6. Seems like nobody had any luck, at least on the threads I saw.
But there have been numerous updates on Windows 10 since those were written.
Has anyone managed to get CS6 After Effects up and running on Windows 10? I'm running CS6 Master Collection and would hate to have to give up the whole thing.

Customize layer controls, or lock layer scale?
Hello everyone. I've been using AE for several years, and something that's always been a real pain where the sun never shines, is the fact that I can't seem to disable scale from the layer controls.
So for example when I'm animating a character and I want to change the position of the hand, but accidentally grab the scale handles and scale the hand instead of moving it. When working with really small layers, it's basically impossible to NOT grab the scale controls, unless you zoom in to something like 400 or 800%.
So does anyone know of a way to disable/hide the scale handles from the layer controls, or perhaps simply lock the scale so it can't be changed? Maybe there is a script that allows you to do this? Or maybe there is a simple setting I've somehow overlooked?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

After Effects error: Input Contract Violation
Receiving an error when opening any after effects projects on certain computers. I know the project is working, since it worked on the same computer last night, and I have tried backups/other projects.
EDIT: This is only happening on my college's computers in the labs. My personal laptop has no problems/errors.
It's completely random which computers get the error, but once you get it no projects will open on that machine.
I have gotten the "file something.mp4" is damaged or unsupported message for other file types (mov, wav, mp3, mxf) I converted the mp4 in question to an uncompressed MOV, and also tried importing other video files i know are working. But still get the error.
Restarted the computer, restarted AE, trashed prefs, the whole nine yards and nothing has changed. Sometimes the error goes away if you open the project 4-5 times. Other than that I haven't found any sort of real solution.

Renders failing (RAM issue) on Windows 10
I've been having issues with renders failing since updating to Windows 10 with the following error message:
After Effects error: Unable to allocate enough memory to render the current frame (1280x720 @ 16bpc). Either decrease the memory requirements for rendering of this frame, or install more RAM. (12805). For more information, see www.adobe.com/go/learn_ae_mem (7 :: 66)After Effects error: Timewarp out of memory. (4) (25 :: 60)
It failed less than half way through the render (at 01:58:22 of 04:10:00) after 2hr57 min. Also my project is set to 8bpc in project settings so why is the error saying its rendering in 16bpc (is this due to an effect)?
Using AE version:
AE CC2015.2 Version 13.7.1.6 (I'm not using Multiprocessing, in fact I don't even see it as an option in the Preference Menu?)
Plugins:
Magic Bullet Suite (12.1.4)
Render settings:
H264 Quicktime MOV with Audio (AAC), 100% quality, 8bpc
PC specs:
16GB RAM, Intel i7-4790, NVIDIA GeForce 720
Running Windows 10 (1511) 64bit with issues, or running Windows 8.1 (6.3 Build 9600) 64bit without issues.
Quicktime:
Version 7.7.9
I don't have any other applications running while using AE and rendering. The render will complete if I set the quality down to 70%, which I thought was weird because I would have assumed AE would need to store more information about each frame (and the frames either side) in order to make the compression. I've rolled back to Win 8.1 and using the same render settings, the render completed in 2hr32 with no error. I have also been able to output an uncompressed version in Quicktime Animation in 16bpc on Win 8.1 which I can't do on Win 10.
The footage is being loaded into AE as (uncompressed) image sequences, with a DOF pass, motion blur, colour correct - so there's quite a lot of stuff happening on each frame but its consistent through out the project. What I mean is it hasn't suddenly got to an intensive frame and given up, there's no difference between the frames it failed and the rest of the project. It's nothing it shouldn't be able to handle (and it's worked on Win 8.1).
I'm just confused as to why it would render OK on Win 8.1 but then be sluggish and fail on Win 10? And what may be a solution? It seems like an issue with the RAM not being made available again?
