Hello After Effects Community!

I have a few questions about a specific video situation I'm working with.

I have footage in 720p at 60FPS. I want to slow down sections of the video by easing into slow motion. What FPS should my comp be? should I make the comp 29.97 or 24 and then bring in the 60 fps footage and time remap it?

Basically I want to have it ply at normal speed and slow down a specific part and then have it speed up again. Help!

AE CS6: no "ray-trace 3d" option / "ray-traced 3d initial shader compile failed"

While using Geforce GTX 780 and Geforce GTX 980, both computers (Windows 7 / 64 bit) don't let me see the rayrrace 3d option. I have updated the raytracer_supported_cards.txt file with the correct naming of the cards. As well, sometimes this message appears: after effects error: ray-traced 3d initial shader compile failed.I have been reading many posts in the net, however, I couldn't find a solid solution.

Anybody who can help this issue?

This issue started out of nowhere for what I consider to be no reason. Working on average sized 720p compositions with modest animations.

I have tried all suggested solutions on this forum yet nothing has worked. I am running fresh comps in AE CC with absolutely no plugins, freshly purged memory, cleaned cache, restarted comp, no other applications running on computer and 13 gb of memory allocated to AE... etc.

I cannot seem to fix this issue.

Whats the next step?

Hi,

I had drawn an animation file in Adobe Illustrator with 8 layers each depicting an animation/drawing.

I tried importing it to After Effects, but the drawing doesn't show up.

Anyone tell me what I am doing wrong; why the drawings are not showing up on the After Effects screen?

I made a video recording of it here:

Audio Spectrum Dedication

I've started working on a really nice audio spectrum for some songs. I send it to one of my friends and he replied with this:

heres an idea for your spectrums

what you should do, is dedicate each peace of the circle to a different piece of the song. like the vocals are one part, instumental/base, techno, that sorta thing

Now, me being sort-of new to AfterFX, I have absolutely no clue how do to this. I would need some god-like extractor to take out the separate parts of the song and have them correlate with the spectrums.

That being said, anyone have any ideas?

Water flow effect in existing photo?

Alligator enters_0000.jpgAlligator enters_0150.jpg

I have an existing photo/animation of a river, rendered in Lightwave that I would like to simulate the water moving.

I also have an alligator entering from the right.  I'm sure I can mask that to appear over the existing effect.

How can I select the water area only and add an effect that makes the water appear to be moving, waving, etc.?

It doesn't have to flow, I just want some motion to appear, and unfortunately the sequence is already rendered, so

this is one of those 'do it in post' moments.

UPDATE: I tried to mask the water and precompose the mask layer, then added a turbulence displacement.  It looks

ok, but I still think I can get a better look.  I'm also trying to get a small splash when the alligator hits the water.

Hi,

I'm having some issues with After Effects that I can't figure out. I've got a video file in .avi that loads and plays fine by itself, but when I import it to edit in After Effects 5.5, I get strange artifacts during playback, and they even translate to the final export. I get the same issue when I try to import and render in Premiere. I have the sequence matching what the video file is, and even right clicked the file, and interpreted the footage for the project to match the video file to be sure, but with no successes at figuring it out. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong here?

I get the same issue regardless of me being on my desktop or laptop. I'm using Windows 7 on both computers.

Per the questions I should ask:

  • What exact version of After Effects? Include the minor version number---e.g., After Effects CC (12.2.1) or After Effects CS6 (11.0.4). Do not just say "After Effects with the latest updates" or "After Effects CC"; give the specific version number. 10.5.0.253
  • Have you installed the recent updates? (If not, you should. They fix a lot of problems.) Yes
  • What operating system? This should include specific minor version numbers, like "Mac OSX v10.6.8"---not just "Mac". Windows 7
  • If you are getting error message(s), what is the full text of the error message(s)? No messages.
  • What were you doing when the problem occurred? What is the exact sequence of steps that you are taking? Importing and test ram preview and or rendering.
  • Has this ever worked before? If this worked before by doesn't work now, what has changed on your computer in the intervening time? First time i've tried this.
  • Tell us about your computer hardware. Include CPU type and number of processor cores, amount of RAM installed, GPU, number and sizes of connected monitors, number of disk drives, and how any external drives are connected. Intel i5 2500k 3.3GHz, 8GB ram, 64b OS, 2 monitors, 3 hard drives. AMD Radion 6900
  • What versions of drivers for your graphics hardware do you have installed (including CUDA driver and driver for display adapter)? 13.12
  • Do you have any third-party I/O hardware (e.g., AJA, Matrox, Blackmagic, MOTU)? No
  • What kind(s) of source footage? When telling about your source footage, tell us about the codecs, not just the container types. For example, "H.264 in a .mov container", not just "QuickTime". .avi
  • Do you have QuickTime installed. (You should.) If so, what version? The answer should be specific, such as "QuickTime 7.6.2". yes, 7.7.5
  • What other software are you running? none
  • Do you have any third-party effects or codecs installed? none that I know of.
  • Are you using OpenGL features in After Effects? I think so, it's enabled.
  • Does the problem only happen with your final output, RAM preview, or both? both
  • Are you using Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing? no
  • Are you using the ray-traced 3D renderer? no
  • If the problem is with output, give your exact output settings (both render setting and output module settings). Screenshots help. 2014-11-13_1514 - Tetra84's library

AAE: how to track eyes to position photos of my face

$

Hi,

I have been taking photos of my face for already more than two years. Now I am trying to create a short movie with those pictures.
My problem: although I tried to take identical photos I am always positioned a little bit different than the day before.

Until today I used some really basic programs: a foil on my monitor and Paint to move the picture to the right place, Irfanview to trim the pictures and finally Moviemaker to create the movie. You can imagine how much effort it is if you have to deal with more than 800 photos.

That's why I thought I could try it with Adobe After Effects using the tracking function. I already watched several tutorials and read some instructions but because I want to create a movie composed of photos and not movie-clips I didn't find a way how to deal with the problem. My idea was that AAE finds both my eyes, moves the picture to the right position and resizes it if necessary. Finally it should trim all pictures to get a proper shape.
Do you know if that's possible with After Effects or is there another program I should use?

Thanks for your help,

Andy

WHY AFTER EFFECTS STILLS SO SLOW IN THE NEW MAC PRO?

I have the new mac pro with this settings:

3 GHz 8-Core Intel Xeon E5

64 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 ECC

AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB

Software OS X 10.9.2

And the AE performs slower than in my old mac pro. I have set the preferences as seen on all those tutorials on this site, I have an SSD external disc for cache files, memory and multiprocessing settings correctly...and previews are very very slow, and I can not even render a single comp without waiting 10 minutes. I am very disappointed and frustrated with this situation...

Am I missing something?

After Effects Cache Folder location keeps changing

$

Hello -

We have a non-traditional set up for After Effects at our network.  We have five HP Z800s and two HP Z820s that are primarily accessed through Windows Remote Log In.  Each user (we have 25) has a unique user name and password.

The first time the user logs on to After Effects they set up their cache location to a specified folder labeled AE CACHE on one of the computer's drives (not the C Drive which just holds applications.)  This allows us to media manage each machine by just deleting the contents in the Cache folder once a week.

Over the past six to twelve months or so we have noticed that users' cache location change from that D: drive back to their user folder within the C Drive.  This obviously quickly and dangerously fills up the C Drive.  I am using WinDirStat to go through the C Drive finding cache that was moved to the C Drive.

I can't explain it.  I've had editors raise the amount of Cache that can be stored to the drive, deleted the Cache folder and created a new one and tried a different location...yet every once in a while a users cache folder returns to the C Drive.  It's not every user either, some haven't had any issues.

I understand we are in a unique situation with our remote log in, but if anyone has encountered anything like this and found a solution I'd really appreciate hearing about it.  I'm at a loss.

Thank you.

AE - Layer that casts shadow but doesn't accept light?

Hello there,

First of all, I'm using the AE CS4 (due to the 32-bit version) and I have a little problem there:

Please check this image below:

ae.png

As you can see, I have some rectangle and there's shadow in the back beneath it. What I wanna do, is that I want to create this rectangle and have SHADOW APPLIED on it but I DON'T want the solid to be affected by the light (as you can see, there's an ugly gradient caused by light).

I tried to enable the "accept shadows" and disable the "accept lights" option but that doesn't work since the layer doesn't accept lights it doesn't accept shadows, either. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Exporting Quality Issues

Hello. I created my first After Effects project using a variety of compositions, jpg images, pngs and Illustrator files. I am trying to export the video into something that people can watch no matter what programs they have on their computer. At some point, I would like to upload it to Vimeo. However, each time I export, the quality is low and my once clear images show up blurry. Also, the smooth transitions begin to jump and become "choppy". Any advise on how to resolve this issue?

I was searching around for answers as to why I can't render in H.264 in AE CC 2014 anymore.

A friend of mine showed me this screenshot from her computer.

My question is how?
I thought this was not even an option anymore.

Lots of weird Single-Frame offset errors lately

$

Hi Everyone,

I have been fighting some mighty germlins of late.  At first, I though the issue was isolated, but it appears to be spreading - or at least not as isolated as I first thought.

The problems began when I was asked to employ the use of the CC Twister plugin on a project for use as a text transition.  When I initially set it up, it worked great, but I found I needed to adjust the timing.  When I dragged a keyframe to facilitate this, I found that the text would either not resolve where it should, instead animating up to the upper left corner (0,0) or if it didn't resolve there, it would simply pop up there for a single frame at some point during the transition.  I found that changing ANYTHING would cause this... even if I kept the timing alone and disabled the layer's track matte; and I didn't have to undo, I could just put the property back like it was and it would work again.  Obviously, I tried deleting the effect, and applying it anew - same results...   I then tried cleaning all the cache files, applying the effect anew once more, and again... same results.  There was no rhyme or reason to it... nothing that appeared to be driving the issue.  In fact, at one point I could RAM preview the comp, and it looked correct, but the problem would pop up again when rendering... despite changing nothing in the comp.  So, I simply had to presume that this effect had a bug of some sort, rendering it useless pending an update.

So then, last night, I had a similar issue during rendering with Trapcode Form.  Whenever I would do quarter or half res previews, things were working as expected... then I'd do a full res export and some of the forms would jump wildly from one frame to the next... always for just one frame, but often several scattered individual frames would be effected.  When I'd go back into the comp after the render, the errors were 'baked in' as though they has always been there... though they most definitely had not.  In this case, the issue started when I enabled multi-processing (it was never on in the first example with CC Twister above).  It occured to me that in THAT case, since one core might be rendering a frame two or three frames ahead of another core, and said core therefore perhaps didn't have the necessary data from the preceeding frame, the position would be incorrectly calulated.  A similar phenomenon occurs in C4D with certain generators when rendering out of sequence, necessitating baking of the solution.... Whether or not this is the case, the fact that the error actually affected the comp post render is really unsettling.  After turning off Multi-Processing, I was able to to export a clean full-res render without any issue.  So, I thought it odd that I was having similar issues with entirely different circumstances at play, but again had to assume these were isolated and that THIS issue was simply a matter of the notoriously unstable AE multi-processing rearing once more its not ready for prime time head.

That brings me to today.  I was asked by my client to give a little subtle movement to the text layers in my scene.  I wanted to try a couple of things... a subtle wiggle on the text layer itself, or using the similar function from the plugin Sure Target, in case they wanted the movement to be on more elements than just the text, I could easily add new elements to the movement by making them 3D layers.  So I made 2 new comps to test, find the right settings, and decide if there was a technique I preferred.  On the text layer itself, I was able to apply the wiggle with some experession controls, no problems at all.  In my second comp, when I employed the use of Sure Target (which itself uses thw Wiggle Experssion with controls), I found that my text would, at some random frame, suddenly pop over to X-0, and nothing I could would prevent it.

So there it is... 3 different situations in the last few days... different variables at play in each one, but a similar issue.  The only commonality here is that all 3 issues involved 3rd party plugins, though all from different companies (Cycore, Red Giant, and Video Copilot), so maybe there is something to that... but there has to be more to it.

My next step is to try and replicate these issues at home, just to rule out the very unlikely possibility that this machine is the culprit.

Appogies for the length of this post - I know that will prevent some of you from reading it, but for those who do and can perhaps offer some theories or insights, I truly appreciate it.

- Will

FWIW the system I am using is a 2013 iMac 3.4GHz i7 with 16GB of RAM running OSX 10.8.4 and the latest version of Creative Cloud.
